Update: City responds to Pinetown pipe burst

A Pinetown family was left to pick up the pieces after eThekwini Municipality's delayed response to a pipe burst.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has responded to the article in last week’s Highway Mail regarding a burst pipe which caused structural damage at a Pinetown house.

eThekwini Municipality’s marketing and communications director Mandla Nsele said, “Following a site investigation, damage assessment, and review of the fault history, the job was completed on April 17 at 16:57.”

He notes that eThekwini Water Services complied with the 48-hour response timeframe for a leaking pipe on the verge and the two-hour response timeframe for a burst pipe on the verge.

According to Nsele, no severe internal or structural damage was identified at the property.

“The City’s Insurance Directorate cannot accept liability for this claim, as the fault was attended to within the applicable service level standards.

“As a recommendation, a request has been sent to assist in arranging a team to unblock sand from the claimant’s drainage system and remove sand within the property as a preventative and goodwill measure,” said Nsele.

Home flooded

The City said this in response to an incident in which a burst municipal water pipe on Rushbrook Road in Moseley Park caused flooding at the Singh family’s home.

According to the home owner Charles Singh, the incident began on Tuesday night when a main water pipe burst at the top of Rushbrook Road.

The water flowing beneath the road created a sinkhole and carried sand and debris into their yard and house over several days.

The family reported that they struggled to get assistance and ultimately arranged private repairs while managing the damage themselves.

Singh estimated that 40 barrows of sand had to be removed, with drainage systems clogged.
