Students battle it out in moot court
Varsity College's various campuses' first year law students battled it out in a moot court competition recently to take part in a national moot court competition.
THE first year Varsity College students, who are studying a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree through the University of the Free State (UFS), displayed their skills in the courtroom at the annual Varsity College Moot Court Competition held recently at the Westville Country Club.
The Varsity College UFS LLB students from the Westville, Durban North and Pietermaritzburg campuses competed in knock out preliminary rounds for their spot in the regional final.
The moot court competition provides an opportunity for these students to showcase their skills in the courtroom before presiding judges, Advocate Anthonie Troskie and Advocate Noel Winfred.
Competing as counsel for the applicants were students Jenine Naidu and Pavishkar Indrajith and competing as the counsel for the respondents were students Dhamien Reddy and Amy van den Berg.
Dhamien Reddy and Jenine Naidu took top honours and were chosen as the best speakers to go forward to represent Varsity College at the UFS Kovsies First Year Moot Court Competition.
“Our students will compete at a Southern African level against first year law students of other national universities and we know that they will do Varsity College proud.
“It is encouraging to note the calibre of students participating in our moot competition. It certainly bodes well for our future Varsity College graduates being equipped for practice,” said Fiona Kaplan, the national programme manager of law.
