IN a joint project between the Hillcrest Conservancy and the Rotary Club of Hillcrest, Highway residents and the children from the Makaphutu Children’s Village enjoyed a morning of learning and fun.

The event, held at the Springside Nature Reserve in Hillcrest, started with an informative talk on bats by Hele Bruigom from the Bats Interest Group of KZN.

All the children were then treated to a mini outdoor museum, overseen by the Durban Natural Science Museum. The litttlies were able to interact with many stuffed wild animals on display at the mobile museum.

Carl Grossmann, the projects director for the Rotary Club of Hillcrest, said that it was a special occasion for the children from Makaphutu Children’s Village as they were able to view the animals in an almost natural setting without having to go to the museum in Durban.

“As part of our outreach programme, we teach children the importance of conservation in a fun and interesting way and we are so glad to have them here with us on such a beautiful day,” said George Victor, chairman of the Hillcrest Conservancy.

The children were then treated to hotdogs and cold drinks before being taken on a mini trail hike into the reserve.
