Woman killed in N3 multi-vehicle collision near Shongweni

A woman in her 30s has died in a horrific crash involving multiple vehicles on the N3 near Shongweni this morning.

A WOMAN believed to be in her 30s was killed in a horrific multi-vehicle collision on the N3 between the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and the Shongweni off-ramp this morning (Wednesday, June 3).

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 07:00 following numerous reports of a serious crash affecting both the Durban-bound and Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageways.

When paramedics arrived, they were met with what Jamieson described as a scene of “chaos and carnage” and immediately called for additional resources due to the scale of the incident.

“It is believed that a truck travelling towards Durban somehow lost control and collided with a vehicle, causing it to overturn.

“The truck then crossed through the centre median and crashed into two more vehicles on the opposite carriageway, while also impacting a fourth vehicle before plunging down an embankment alongside the freeway.

“During assessments of those involved, paramedics found that one of the drivers, a woman believed to be in her 30s, had sustained fatal injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, there was nothing that could be done to save her and she was declared dead at the scene,” reported Jamieson.

A truck plunged down an embankment alongside the N3 freeway.

Three other motorists suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported to hospital after receiving treatment and stabilisation from advanced life support paramedics.

Jamieson said the crash has caused significant disruption along the busy highway.

“The Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway was closed following a spillage of what is believed to be corn from the truck, while traffic on the Durban-bound side remains heavily congested as emergency crews continue clean-up operations.”

He urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
