Phony cops strike in Pinetown

Criminals dressed in police uniforms robbed a man in Pinetown of R12 200. This incident follows a robbery where a family was locked up in its home and robbed by criminals posing as policemen.

WATERFALL resident ShammahWilliams was allegedly pulled over by a police vehicle and robbed near the railway station in Pinetown at 1am on Thursday 25 July.

According to Williams there were eight armed men in the vehicle, and half of them were dressed in police uniform.

He said after he was pulled over the men exited the vehicle. One man opened his door, pulled Williams out of his vehicle and searched his pockets. The man took R200 from Williams’s wallet, while the rest of the men searched his vehicle, where they found and took an envelope with R12 000, Williams said.

“They did not identify themselves,” added Willliams.

Williams reported that he tried to ask them who they were and what they wanted, but they told him that he spoke to much and threatened to arrest him. Williams said he was not harmed during the incident.

This incident follows a robbery in Wyebank, where a family was locked up in their home and robbed by a group of six men, where two of the robbers were also dressed in police uniforms. No conclusive links have been made between the two incidents.

According to Const. Lungile Mbatha, the communications officer of the Pinetown police station, a case docket was opened on 26 July and the incident is still under investigation. No arrests has been made so far.

Const. Mbatha urges the community to report all suspicious activities and also to report the criminals around their neighbourhood to the police.
