ACCORDING to security company ADT Security, many criminals steal copper pipes and cables because it is a way to make a quick buck as metal carries some value and can be sold to a scrap-dealer in return for cash.
However, for residents and business owners, who have to spend money fixing the resulting problems, this can be a costly exercise.
Martin Kriel, managing director of ADT Security, east coast region, suggested trying to make your property less of a target for metal thieves by enclosing exposed copper piping.
“Also, where you are able to, remove tap handles and other copper items overnight or when not in use as these could be stolen quite easily,” said Kriel.
Kriel said at many residential properties you will find that copper pipes are fixed to the outside of walls. There is no quick-fix solution to preventing these pipes from being stolen.
“I would, however, advise that residents regularly check their premises to ensure that nothing that could aid a thief in removing the pipes is left lying around.”
Kriel reminded residents to check their perimeter walls or fences for holes or weak points that would allow criminals easy access to their property.
“It is also a good idea to reach an agreement with your neighbours to look out for anything or anyone suspicious at each other’s homes,” Kriel added.
