Carters celebrate a Golden Jubilee
The Carter's celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
WESTVILLE residents Julian and Maureen Carter will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on 17 August.
The elated couple, who was married in 1963 at St Paul’s Church in central Durban, explained that they started dating under unusual circumstances.
In the late 1950s Julian, who was born in England and moved with his parents to South Africa in 1947, was working as a managing director at a company that imported fire extinguishers.
Maureen, who was a born and bred Durban girl, applied for a position at the company where Julian was working.
“Julian only decided to ask me out when his friend started to show some interest in me,” said Mareen. “I had to know what he found so interesting,” responded Julian with a playful wink.
On their first date they planned to go and watch a movie, but Julian’s car broke down. “It rained that night, so by the time he reached my house he was completely drenched,” said Maureen.
Despite their unconventional start the Carters have managed to build a loving, healthy and strong marriage. “You have to get over whatever you are angry about. We have always felt that we have made a commitment and that we had to work through any difficulties,” explained Maureen.
“Our three children and four grandchildren are definitely the greatest reward. Family is very important to us and we are fortunate enough that all our children live in the Duran area,” added Julian.
Maureen raised their three children while Julian spent most of his life working in the Life Insurance Industry.
For the past ten years julian has been working in the Security Industry. Julian has also been volunteering as a member of the committee at the Westville CPF, while Maureen works as a receptionist at a specialist surgeon. Maureen has also been a member of the Cowie’s Hill Women’s Institute for many years.
