Shannon sets new record

The Grade 8 pupil from Westville Girls' High School broke the long standing record by 9cm.

SINCE Grade 4 Shannon Verster (above), who is now in Grade 8 at Westville Girls’ High School, has been doing high jump.

She was selected as a reserve for the U10 team, and ended up participating and winning the event. This sparked her interest in the discipline and in both Grade 5 and 6 she went to KZN Athletics trials.

In Grade 7 Shannon made the KZN league team and was selected to go to Pretoria to jump. She is coached by her father.

Shannon recently jumped her personal best of 1.59m breaking the WGHS record for her age group, which was 1.52m, a record that was set in 1986. She broke the long standing record by 9cm. The school principal and staff congratulated her for her perseverance and determination which has certainly paid off.

She was chosen as the SPAR Star pupil of the Month.
