Help Jordi win the experience of a lifetime

Local muso needs your vote to boost his chances in the Converse Get Out of the Garage competition.

MUSIC has been a part of Jordi Van Dyk’s life for as long as he can remember. This year the young musician entered the Converse Get Out of the Garage competition and his lyrical talents have nabbed him a spot in the top 10.

“I have been in and out of bands since I was 12 years old and grew up in a musical family, with my mom Adri playing the piano and my dad, Ian, playing guitar. Music is just a part of me,” said Jordi.

He entered the competition when his friend Matthew Mole’s career sky-rocketed after winning the competition last year.

“Converse provided him with the perfect platform for people to take his music seriously and him winning made me realise how perfect an opportunity this would be for me to do what I love to do,” said Jordi.

To enter the competition each applicant had to submit an original and fully recorded song and from the 334 bands that entered, local singer Jordi made the top 10 cut.

His song, Headed for the Shore, now has more than 2000 plays on Soundcloud and can be described as a mix of contemporary pop and traditional folk.

“The song is about two individuals and their journey in life and how they will have ups and downs. How there are times that you will feel you are in a storm but there is always hope ahead. It took me about one and a half years of writing on and off to complete it,” said Jordi.

He is currently a full-time musician and admits it is not the easiest lifestyle. “I would much rather pursue what I love and hopelessly fail than to not try at all and regret it down the line,” said Jordi.

If the Kloof-based muso wins the competition he would win a trip for three days to the UK where he would have a chance to play at the 100 Club, where the Beatles and Rolling Stones once performed. He would then be flown to New York for three days to record the winning song professionally at the Rubbertrack Studios. For the cherry on top, upon arriving back in South Africa he would be offered the opportunity to play at Rocking the Daisies.
