Skaters help set Lahee Park on track
Looking to the future of the longboarding sport, local skaters teamed up to clean Lahee Park's skating track.
WITH the local community becoming more involved with the rehabilitation of Lahee Park, local skater Mitch Suter organised a clean up of the skating track at the weekend.
Mitch started the Facebook page DDS Lahee Park Clean up and called on local skaters to help with the clearing and cleaning of the almost forgotten skating track.
“What people don’t realise is that it is illegal for us to skate on the roads or on the pavement. There are facilities that are up and running for the short-board riders, but for us longboarders there is nowhere for us to train and practice. This Lahee Park track is the only legal place for us to use,” said Mitch.
His other motivation was his concern for the safety of the younger riders. “The longboarding scene is growing rapidly and we need somewhere safe for the groms (youngsters) to learn how to skate,” said Mitch.
The skate track has been used in the recent past as a dumping ground and it took hours of manual labour from the dedicated skaters to clear most of it away.
“We have permission from the municipality to re-tar the track. Hopefully in the future, when the funding becomes available, we will be able to extend it by a further 200m,” said Mitch.
