A love like a fine wine

Charlotte and Reg Rowe celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 11 September.

MATURING through the years is what Waterfall couple, Reg and Charlotte Rowe, believe is their secret to sixty years of marriage.

Their love story started many years ago, while Charlotte, who lived in Bizana in Transkei, was at school in Kokstad. Reg brought a lunchbox for another girl at the school. He was introduced to Charlotte, but he called her a flirt and she thought he was arrogant, and so they parted. When Charlotte finished school, she moved to Durban and soon their paths crossed once more at a dance.

A year later, they tied the knot in Bizana on 11 September 1953.

Charlotte explained that Reg broke his leg while playing soccer and was put off work for three months which she thought would be the best time to get married.

Charlotte moved to Durban in 1953 to work as a switchboard operator while Reg worked on the railway at the habour.

The couple share three children, Rosemarie, Richard and Catherine and have seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a fifth one on the way.

Although the 60 years have gone by, Charlotte said she still adores the way her husband loves still her the same as when they were newly married.

Reg smiled and said: “We’ve matured through the years which has only brought us closer together.”

Love, trust and faith is what they believe kept them strong through their long-lasting relationship.

Their advice for other couples is not to laugh at each other instead to laugh with each other.

Reg and Charlotte shared their special diamond anniversary celebrations with family two weeks ago.
