Bikers ride against e-tolls

More than 500 bikers joined the mass ride to protest against e-tolls.

METRO Police guided the traffic as more than 500 bikers rode en masse to protest against the e-toll system on Saturday 14 September.

The bikers gathered at Shell Garage, NPN Motors in Pinetown. They left the garage in proper formation to the Mariannhill Toll gate where they stated their case.

Tess Matthyen, administration and accounts manager at Mcbat SA said the process and idea to protest against e-tolls started in Gauteng.

“Everybody complained and moaned about it but nobody actually did anything. As per normal we would just complain and then eventually pay up.

“Then bikers in Gauteng came up with the idea to stage a mass ride to protest, and the rest of the country got on the bus.

“If we made sure it was stopped where it started, we would have no e-toll system in the rest of the country.

Matthyen said they went to great lengths to make sure that the mass ride went smoothly, from giving notice to the local council, to organising marshalls, to meetings with the Metro police and making sure that everybody who attended knew they were not permitted to carry dangerous weapons.
