DR Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Pietermaritzburg-based global disaster relief group Gift of the Givers, has urged this year’s Kearsney College matric pupils to be the best at whatever they choose to do.
Speaking at the Kearsney College speech day on Friday 20 September, Dr Sooliman encouraged pupils to believe in themselves, and do whatever they undertook with passion.
The school’s high academic standard was endorsed with one third of matric pupils achieving academic colours and honours (for an aggregate of more than 75 per cent), 13 of those Cum Laude (more than 86%).
The college’s Dux for 2013, Edwin Bunge, received academic honours Cum Laude, as well as subject prizes for Afrikaans, modern languages, life orientation and shared the physical science trophy.
His runner-up Greg Royston, who also received academic honours Cum Laude, received subject prizes for mathematics and advanced mathematics and shared them for accounting and physical science.
Kearsney’s coveted trophy for best all-rounder in the 6th Form, as well as subject prizes for English essay, dramatic arts and drama practical, was awarded to Vaughn Pears, who also received academic honours Cum Laude. He was in the top 100 in KZN in the Maths Olympiad and received a gold award in the English Olympiad; and also played rugby, soccer and tennis.
Others who were awarded Academic Honours Cum Laude were Thomas Hudson, Daniel Kolev, Wakithi Mabaso, Brits van Zyl, Brett Reinhardt, Samuel Hansen, David Clarke, Joshua Bean, Jarred Hayes-Hill and Wesley Green.
