Recycling made easy
An altruistic Gillitts resident has started a recycling centre at the Forrest Hills Sports Club, and is encouraging residents to recycle.
GILLITTS resident, Lauren Wilson, recently started a recycling centre at the Forrest Hills Sports Club in Kloof.
Wilson has provided several bins for residents to drop off glass, cans, paper and cardboard at the club. She hopes to incorporate plastic recycling into her project in the near future.
Wilson has also drafted more than 75 schools and offices into her project.
“I collect the recycled material from the schools and the offices. I hope that it will encourage them to monitor how much of the material they are using and recycling,” said Wilson.
The passionate resident initiated the recycling project not only to facilitate and encourage recycling within the community, but also to finance her NPO, the Ladybird Foundation.
Wilson sells the recycled material to various recycling companies and uses the finances to organise fundraising drives for various causes.
She will also donate a percentage of the finances to The Forrest Hills Sport Club.
“I am passionate about my community as well as the environment and my heart it too big to focus on one single cause. So, I decided I would help where ever I can,” she said.
According to Wilson South Africans are not educated on recycling and how much of an impact it can make.
“Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to keep a 100 watt light bulb burning for 4 hours. How amazing is that?” asked Wilson.
“I believe that if I make it easy for people they will take part, and that is exactly what I have done,” said Wilson.
