Cops caution about slight increase in remote jamming
The police in Hillcrest urge motorists in the area to remain vigilant, take extra precautions when parking and securing their vehicles.
THE Hillcrest SAPS have noted a slight increase in incidents involving remote jamming in the Hillcrest area, particularly around public parking areas such as shopping malls, supermarkets and other busy locations.
The stations communications officer, Sergeant Nokuphila Mchunu said motorists are urged to remain vigilant and take extra precautions when parking and securing their vehicles.
Mchunu said remote jamming involves criminals interfering with the signal between a vehicle’s remote and its locking system.
“This may result in a motorist believing that the vehicle has been locked when, in fact, the doors remain unlocked. Criminals can then take advantage of the situation by stealing valuables from inside the vehicle or targeting the vehicle itself,” said Mchunu.

She added that the Hillcrest SAPS advise motorists not to simply press the remote from a distance and walk away.
“After locking your vehicle, physically check the door by pulling the handle to confirm that it is properly locked. Take a few seconds to look around your vehicle and be aware of people behaving suspiciously or watching motorists as they park,” said Mchunu.
She said motorists are also reminded not to leave valuable or tempting items visible inside their vehicles.
“Handbags, laptops, cellphones, cash, shopping bags, electronic equipment and other valuables can attract criminals. Where possible, valuables should be removed from the vehicle or stored securely out of sight before reaching your destination,” said Mchunu.
Stay alert. Stay vigilant. Protect your vehicle.
Mchunu said the Hillcrest SAPS encourage community members to report suspicious activity immediately and to work together with the SAPS, security personnel and other safety structures to help prevent vehicle-related crimes.
Remember:
