PINETOWN Crime Prevention members arrested a man for possession of unlicensed gun and ammunition.

PINETOWN Crime Prevention officers arrested a man for possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition on Friday afternoon.

According to Lt Bongumusa Manqele, Pinetown SAPS communications officer, police were patrolling the area when they received a complaint of suspicious men walking along Shepstone Road near Mana factory in New Germany.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers searched two of the men and the third continued walking to the nearby petrol service station.

Police followed him and when he was searched police recovered a Norinco 9mm pistol , one magazine and eight live rounds of ammunition.

When police checked the gun’s serial number it was discovered that the gun had been reported stolen at Durban Central police station in 2000.

“The firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish whether it was used in the commission of crime,” said Manqele.

The man appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.
