Callum’s rugby tackle saves the day

A modest Callum Borthwick said he was just happy to help.

A BRAVE high school pupil helped security officers make a civilian arrest, after he tackled a robber in Ridge Road, Hillcrest on Friday 15 November.

Laura White and her boyfriend, Callum Borthwick, who are both matric pupils at Hillcrest High School, had finished their exams for the day, and were on their way back after shopping at Hillcrest central, when they saw Blue Security officials walking a woman to the school.

They decided to stop and see what happened.

Upon talking to the woman they recognised her as one of their school cleaners, Precious Ngcobo. She was mugged by two men, in Ridge Road, Hillcrest.

While walking Precious back to the school, Callum noticed one of the robbers vaulting over a fence from a home in Ridge Road. Callum, being a good rugby player, tackled the guy into a bush and the homeowner came to his assistance.

“By this time security officials from Blue Security, Enforce and Securelink arrived to arrest the robber. I’m just happy to have assisted them in some way,” said Callum.

He added that Ngcobo claimed that two cellphones and R800 cash was stolen during the robbery. However she believed the second robber had escaped with the items.

After pacifying Precious, Callum and Laura took her to the police station to report the incident.

The owner of the house who assisted Callum after the tackle, commended the two pupils on being so courageous. He also complimented Callum on his tackle.

Callum is an excellent swimmer and a good rugby player.

Headmaster of the school, Craig Girvin, was full of praise for his two pupils for coming to the aid of the Hillcrest High School staff member and added that it never ceased to delight him as to just how many pupils at the school were so community-orientated.
