Boxems celebrate six decades of wedded bliss

The Boxem's secret to a successful marriage is honest communication.

LIVING for each other, is what Christina and Willem Boxem believe is their secret to 60 years of marriage.

The couple met at a bioscope in Holland. Willem’s friends dared him to sit next to her, which he did, and the following week he returned to the same bioscope to meet her once again.

Christina said they were only in their teens at the time, but they fell in love and started a relationship slowly. They decided to tie the knot at the city hall in Enschede, the Netherlands on 7 January 1954. Christina was 17.

They emigrated to South Africa on 19 August 1965, where they settled in Hammarsdale. They now live in Botha’s Hill and have two daughters, Alie and Ina, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren (with another two on the way). Willem worked for a textile factory in Hammarsdale for 35 years until he retired.

They agreed that they had a wonderful 60 years of marriage and believe what you put into a relationship is what you get out.

“She is my friend, my lover and my everything. I still open the door for her and buy her flowers. That will never stop,” said Willem.

They share many fond memories of their young days together, especially their passion for sport. Christina played handball while Willem fancied soccer. They also enjoyed watching live cricket and rugby matches.

Their advice to other couples is to live for your partner. “If both parties live like that, you can’t go wrong,” said Willem.

Christina added that trust, communication and honesty is also important. “If there’s something that’s bugging you, talk about it,” said Christina.

The charming couple celebrated their diamond milestone with family and a few friends at a special luncheon at Africa Peninsula on the Bluff on Sunday.
