A Malvern mother was saved from a brutal attack when her son acted as a human shield to protect her from armed robbers who broke into their home on Christmas Eve.
According to Blue Security managing director, Darryn le Grange, the robbers attacked the family in their Chester Road home at 1pm.
le Grange said, “Three men entered the property and one of them tried to attack the woman with a knife but her son jumped in front of her to shield her from the attack. He sustained stab wounds to his arms and legs.”
The son allegedly fought back in self-defense and one of the three suspects sustained a stab wound before attempting to flee the scene. The injured suspect fell into a gorge and died while trying to escape.
le Grange added, “Neighbours and other community members chased the wounded suspect and he fell into a nearby gorge. The other two suspects are still at large. Members of the SAPS Search and Rescue team arrived at the scene and declared the suspect dead.”
The son was taken to hospital for medical treatment. At the time of the incident, the family could not confirm if anything was stolen from the house during the attack.
“We urge residents to be vigilant during the holidays as there have been many incidents reported to us over the past week where criminals have either managed to burgle homes or were thwarted and fled without taking anything. This shows that criminals are not taking a holiday but are rather using the opportunity to target properties in the hope of finding easy pickings,” said le Grange.
He added that residents should consider taking advantage of the latest security technology such as the Res-Q-Me panic bracelet.
“With just one double click residents can alert their security company for armed response assistance in an emergency situation such as a home invasion or a hijacking. This can not only save time in an emergency to get armed response to the scene to call for medical assistance, but can also improve the chance of apprehending the suspects, ” added le Grange.
