HE is not yet 14 years old, but Hevant Naiker is already proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the cricket field. For this reason, he was chosen as Kloof High School’s SPAR Star of the Month.
A cricketer of few words, Hevant prefers to wield a bat, and being out on the cricket pitch, to talking. He recently made his highest run score so far, by making 124 runs from 44 balls while playing in the Kloof High School U15 team. The school rewarded him by inviting Hevant to inscribe his name on the Centurion Bat.
Hevant was only nine years old when he started playing cricket at the Chatsworth Sport Club. In the beginning, he concentrated on improving his skills at wielding the bat and standing behind the wickets as the wicket keeper, and is still at it. Hevant has scored five half centuries for his club and has been selected to represent Durban South twice. He has also travelled to Gauteng and Kimberley on tours with the team.
The secret to his success is gaining lots of experience and keeping fit. Hevant believes that keeping fit is the key to being a good batsman as “you have to be quick through the wickets,” said Hevant.
Hevant still has many more cricket games to face before he achieves his dream of being selected to play for the Proteas, but in the meantime, he is set to keep on improving his batting average and ensure success for his Kloof High School team.
