Security officer nabs alleged rapists
Two alleged rapists were arrested in Hamilton Way in Hillcrest recently.

A BLUE Security reaction officer arrested two men who allegedly attempted to rape two women in Summerveld last Sunday.
The security company’s managing director, Darryn le Grange, said the two women were on their way to visit their brother when the two men started to follow them.
“The women were walking along Hamilton Way when two young men, aged around 25 years old, assaulted and attempted to rape them,” said le Grange. “Our quick thinking reaction officer, who was patrolling the area, intervened. He chased the men and arrested both of them.”
“Fortunately for residents and their employees there is little that goes on in the Blue zone that goes unnoticed by our reaction officers, who are trained to be proactive in preventing crime, as much as responding swiftly to local emergencies,” le Grange said. The men were handed over to the Hillcrest SAPS who attended the scene of the crime.
Le Grange noted that gangs of armed robbers targeted businesses in the Highway area during the past week, while residents had also fallen prey to home robberies.
“Four armed robbers held up a family in Ashley when they arrived home at 8pm in the evening. The men fled with two television sets, cellphones, a laptop, keys, remotes, jewellery and a white VW Jetta,” he said.
In a separate incident, a New Germany resident was injured during a robbery in Blair Atholl Road. A robber assaulted the man outside his home and fled with R200 cash.
He added that the company had noticed a trend during business robberies where gangs appeared undeterred by security guards on the premises.
“During a robbery in Stockville Road, a gang of five robbers held up a security guard at gunpoint and stole his gun, ammunition, tyres and other items from the property,” said le Grange. “In another incident in Stockville Road, a gang of three robbers held up a security guard and fled with his bag, cell phone, security badge and tie.”
Le Grange advised business owners to ramp up security and install CCTV cameras and street cameras, which would both act as a deterrent and assist the police with identifying suspects during their investigation.
“We advise business owners and residents to be vigilant especially when arriving and leaving their homes and offices as these are prime times that criminals target victims. If you notice a suspicious vehicle or individuals near your gate rather be safe and drive around the block. If the individuals have not moved on, contact the police and your security company,” said le Grange.
