Bringing youth together through sport

Teams from across the greater Durban area took part in many 6-a-side soccer games in Westville on Monday.

THE DA brought the youth of West Durban together through sport in an action filled event in Westville to commemorate Youth Day on 16 June.

The fun event was conceived and executed by the DA Youth West Durban branch, led by Roanne Sutcliffe, Luke Waltham and Pierre Gertenbach.

Various teams were invited to participate and entries were received from teams in Mpumalanga, Hillcrest, Gillitts, Wyebank, Cato Crest and Central Durban.

The format was a 6-a-side soccer tournament and the players slogged it from mid morning till lunch. At lunchtime the hungry players were fed and the games continued.

The eventual winners was the team from Wyebank, named the Golden Players.

Present at the event were the leader of the DA eThekwini caucus, councillor Zwakele Mncwango, DA candidate for the Ward 18 by election, Bruce Sutcliffe, and Tim Brauteseth MP.

Sutcliffe thanked the youth team for all their excellent work in the run up to event and on the day itself.

Councillor Mncwango expressed the inspiration he felt by seeing the young people of South Africa working and playing sport together, regardless of racial backgrounds.

“This was the dream of 1976 and it is really amazing to see it in reality today. We have cast off the shackles of the past and take each other’s hands as equals to face the challenges of the future,” said Brauteseth.

The DA Youth in West Durban plan to hold further events throughout the coming year to continue the impetus gained in this event.
