Build you future at career expo

Highway schools are encouraged to attend the annual SAICE bridge building and engineering career expo.

THE South African Institution for Civil Engineering (SAICE) will host its annual schools’ bridge building competition and career expo on Thursday 7 August from 8.30am till late at the UKZN Howard College campus in the Unite building.

All high schools in the Highway area are invited to attend the expo and all pupils are encouraged to take part in the bridge building competition.

The career expo is designed to help pupils that are interested in science and engineering. At the expo the aspiring engineers will be able to ask all their burning questions to experienced engineers, technicians and technologists from fields of civil, mechanical, electrical and electronic and chemical and metallurgy engineering.

SAICE initiated the bridge building competition 21 years ago to further high school pupils’ use of maths and science in an engineering context to grow the profession.

Due to its practical and hands-on nature, this event is one of the most successful initiatives used to attract pupils from previously disadvantaged rural schools, model C schools and private schools to civil engineering, as well as promote a general awareness of the profession.

The bridge building teams will consist of three pupils each and they will be required to construct model bridges from dowel sticks, glue and string – all according to a technical briefing. This event will culminate in a bridge testing ceremony to determine the winners.
