Kearsney Choir wins at world champs

Kearsney Choir won 3 gold medals in Latvia.

The Kearsney College choir won three gold medals and retained their World Champion status at the eighth World Choir Games held in Latvia.

The choir won gold in all three categories it entered – the Young Male Choirs, Scenic Folklore and Scenic Pop – as well as World Champion status in the latter for which they received an astounding 96 per cent and a standing ovation.

Even the judges were impressed, with several of them recording the performance on their cell phones before leading the standing ovation.

The Choir Games is the Olympics for choirs and is the largest competition in the history of choir music – having attracted 27 000 participants and 460 choirs from 73 nations this year.

Crowd favourites and defending Champions, Kearsney received several standing ovations throughout the competition.

With its signature blend of classical, pop and indigenous music, the choir has now won 12 gold and six silver medals since the inaugural event in 2000.

In the lead up to the Games, the choir was invited to represent the continent of Africa at the United Nations’ sponsored ‘Rhythms of One World Festival’ involving seven choirs from around the world at the UN in Geneva.

“The boys’ colourful exuberance, energy and vigour, matched with top notch musical performances, highlights all that can be achieved if differences are put aside and a common goal is sought,” said Kearsney College headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg.

“The pride in African culture, the passion with which it is presented, and the obvious teamwork are inspiring. Their unity and harmony show in and out of performance,”

The choir will perform their award winning performance at Kearsney on 22 July with the internationally acclaimed show choir Synergy from the United States. Bookings are through Computicket.
