Doing their bit for Mandela Day

The DA youth has made it their aim to not only be an example to other young people in the area by showing them ways in which they can become politically and socio-economically active.

DEMOCRATIC Alliance’s youth group in the West Durban area, helped clean up the Hammarsdale area for Mandela Day.

The youth group was established recently and their first act of community outreach was planning a highly successful soccer tournament to mark Youth Day on 16 June.

Today, they visited a local children’s home and embarked on a clean-up project in the Hammarsdale area to present their community outreach for Mandela Day.

Following on from this is a number of projects aimed at drawing attention to the plight of women in the country during August, which is recognised as Women’s Month.

Luke Waltham, one of the founding members of the West Durban DA youth said they want to get involved in the communities of West Durban and focus on the key issues that these areas are facing. “We, as the youth, are enthusiastic and are capable of doing this,” said Waltham.

At their most recent meeting, the DA youth invited newly-elected Ward 18 councillor, Bruce Sutcliffe, to talk to their members about the importance of the youth being involved in politics.

“Not only did the support of the DA youth throughout the run-up to the by-election show what promise lies untapped within the youth of our country, it was also the dedication shown by many young people from various wards on the day of the by-election, with some sitting at voting stations for up to 14 hours, that lead to a historic result of 91 per cent for the DA,” said Sutcliffe.

However, Sutcliffe also went on to say that voter statistics showed a worrying trend as many young people had not come out to vote, indicating that political apathy has crept into the youngest generation of voters.

As such, West Durban DA youth has made it their aim to not only be an example to other young people in the area by showing them ways in which they can become politically and socio-economically active, but also to encourage debate on how to solve the many problems facing the country’s youth.
