Volunteers help out at HACT for Mandela Day

Hundreds of volunteers spent their 67 minutes on Mandela Day helping out with some of the community projects at Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust on Friday 18 July.

HILLCREST Aids Centre Trust welcomed volunteers who wanted to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day on Friday 18 July.

Some volunteers spent the day weeding the plant nursery gardens, potting at the potting shed, watering the plants and filling compost bags.

Others preferred to make beaded bangles of hope which will be sold at the HACT shop. The beading women from the Valley of 1000 Hills were also present to help the volunteers brush up their skills.

Some pupils from Hillcrest High School, Kearsney College and St Mary’s DSG helped by sanding down furniture for the new shop extension.

Staff from Hollard Insurance formed a band and performed live music for visitors and patients in the Respite Centre. They also provided cakes for the patients.

HACT offered free HIV/AIDS tests. Each test took roughly 20 minutes per person including counselling.

Forty members of the ANC Women’s League delivered food and clothes parcels for the feeding and clothing scheme. They also helped with activities such as serving lunch to the respite care patients, and singing.

Hirsh’s Hillcrest provided teas and coffees and a R1000 sponsorship voucher.

Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust staff was overwhelmed with the amount of support they received that day and thanked the community for their assistance.
