Bakkie dangles over St John’s bridge

Four people were injured when a bakkie and a taxi collided on St John's Avenue in Pinetown.

A BAKKIE was almost pushed over the edge of the St John’s Bridge in Pinetown after it collided with a taxi this morning.

According to Derrick Banks, ER24 spokesman, the taxi t-boned the bakkie and pushed it halfway over the edge of the bridge.

“The bakkie was traveling on the M7, westbound, towards Pinetown and the taxi was driving on the M13 Durban bound. It seems that he was heading towards Queensburgh from Pinetown,”  said Banks.

The driver of the bakkie fell and rolled down the embankment as he tried to escape the wreckage. He was treated for minor injuries.

The passenger in the front seat of the bakkie was trapped in the wreckage. He was rescued from the wreckage after the fire department cut the vehicle’s door with the jaws of life. Paramedics treated him for neck and back injuries.

Two other passengers from the back of the bakkie were treated for minor and serious injuries. No one in the taxi was injured.

The cause of the accident is unknown.
