Kearsney wraps up another good sports weekend

Kearsney College won the Sevens Festival at Crawford College at the weekend.

KEARSNEY College won two out of three sports at the weekend.

They started of the weekend and won the much enjoyed Sevens Festival at Crawford La Lucia, which raised R150 000 for the Ryan Walker Foundation.

An added delight was that Mitch Nesbitt was awarded a R20 000 bursary to the Stellenbosch Rugby Academy for his outstanding play at the festival. As he is currently in Grade 11, he will be able to take it up in 2016.

Kearsney beat Northwood 57-5 in the final, having come off a tough semi-final against Clifton College, which Kearsney won 15-12. Northwood beat Hilton 22-0 in their semi on the Saturday. Kearsney played two games on the Friday against Grantleigh and Crawford La Lucia. They won both games convincingly, 38-5 against Grantleigh and 33-5 against the home team. On Saturday morning Kearsney opened with a 62-0 win over Kingsway, before progressing to the semis against Clifton College.

Aside from Mitch Nesbitt, Kearsney’s other notable performances came from Tristan Dixon and James Hall.

On the soccer field. Kearsney lost 1-2 to DHS. Kearsney fielded a record 29 soccer teams across the age groups this weekend, with the U14 teams going down to ‘H’.

Kearsney’s 1st team played a well organised DHS side, which showed good skill and passing abilities.

DHS went on the attack early, with a clash between a DHS player and the Kearsney goal keeper which saw the ball ricochet into the net. DHS scored shortly afterwards, following a handling error from the visitors, which resulted in a 2-0 half-time score.

Kearsney went on the attack in the second half and were awarded a penalty. Thomas Host stepped up but it was saved by the goal keeper. Kearsney scored on the rebound, taking the score to 2-1. Kearsney dominated the last part of the game, continually attacking in an attempt to equalise, but DHS were victorious in the end.

In canoeing news, the Kearsney boys participated in the SA K4 Championships at Shongweni Dam at the weekend, racing during the two days with the combined times of the 10km course determining the overall winners.

The U16 team of Rory McNeill, Matthew Pitcher, Tim Marsh and Stuart McCleave finished third in the U16 category, receiving a bronze medal. In the U14 category, Kearsney’s Dylan Hanson and partners finished first overall, winning the gold medal and Callam Davis, Robert McConnell and partners claimed the silver medal in their age category.
