Two arrested for cable theft

In a joint operation between the Westville Metro officers and the Westville SAPS, two copper thieves were nabbed.

TWO men were arrested by the Westville SAPS this morning in connection with cable theft in the area.

A homeowner in Chearsley Road in Westville North was woken up by an intruder on his property at about 3.15am.

“At the time he did not know what was going on, so he contacted the police and the first people at the scene were Constable Muleki Sikhosana and Constable Terrence Pillay of the Westville Metro Police,” said sergeant Stephen Clark, media spokesman for the Westville SAPS.

According to the Metro police on duty, the electrical cables that ran overhead had been pulled down and also been cut off outside the Chearsley Road resident’s home.

“They also noted that to reach the cables, the two thieves had climbed up the surrounding trees to reach the top of the poles.

“They immediately did a sweep of the area and arrested two Mozambican nationals, aged 23 and 26, in possession of 50m of copper cable as well as two bolt cutters,” said Clark.

The Westville SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Ellen Emmanuel praised the efforts of the Metro officers and stated it was a fine example of an interdepartmental partnership in combating crime in the area.
