Stitched up teddies bring hope
Sally McCall, a talented Hillcrest resident, has been raising funds for various Highway NPOs by renovating and selling soft toys.
SALLY McCall, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, has been using her skills to repair and sell soft toys in support of Highway charities for the past decade.
The humble Hillcrest resident has proven that you are never too old to make a difference. McCall frequently visits the Highway Hospice and SPCA charity shops, where she buys the various soft toys. After she has made her purchase she takes them home and gives them a complete makeover. This includes a bath, some grooming, and if required, a brand new outfit, which she stitches together herself.
According to McCall she also enjoys including other items into her fundraising collection, such as china and unusual ornaments. She sells these items at various markets across the Highway area.
“I try and make my stalls as interesting as possible. I find it fun and challenging. I get to see and meet new people all the time. As we grow older, I believe we need to continue interacting with other people and stay positive and motivated,” she said.
The profits made by McCall is used to fund additional renovations and donated to the Highway Hospice and the Kloof and Highway SPCA. “I decided to support these charities because I have a lot of respect for selfless dedication. I am a passionate animal lover and know many friends who have been assisted by the Highway Hospice,” she said.
McCall is in no hurry to give up on her charitable work, and has credited her health to her ‘good genes’. “I think I am just lucky and blessed. I am still healthy, active and independent, and I hope to keep going as long as possible,” she said. Contact Sally McCall on 031 765 7357.
