Stray pup needs a home

The Kloof and Highway SPCA are hoping to find a loving home for Petra, an Africanis stray rescued in Kloof.

THE wet nose and sad eyes of a rescued stray Africanis pup has stolen the hearts of many staff members at the Kloof and Highway SPCA. They are all thrilled that the sweet hound is now ready to be adopted.

After she was recently rescued from the streets of Kloof, she particularly stole the attention of Petros Ntuli, who works in the clinic. SPCA staff received several calls on

Wednesday, 30 July regarding a scared pup that was roaming the streets. Inspector Val Carney responded to the calls in an attempt to locate and rescue her. However, her efforts were futile and she was forced to request assistance from Inspector Petros Simamane.

“The dog was running frantically and was in danger of being hit by a car. Eventually the dog ran down a pan handle driveway where the Inspectors were able to catch her using a net. She was so frightened and did not want anybody to touch or handle her,” said Lisa Gadd, the PR or outreach officer at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

After she was rescued and examined by the SPCA’s vet Ntuli began spending time with the frightened canine in the hopes of taming her. His hard work and dedication paid off. “He has such a magic touch with animals, and has been nicknamed the “animal whisperer” by the clinic staff. She has come out of her shell completely. She just loves attention, and from being a dog who did not want anyone to touch her, she now enthusiastically approaches people to get a love and a scratch,” said Gadd.

Staff have affectionately nicknamed the young pup, Petra, after Ntuli. The once shy Africanis has blossomed into a loving and affectionate dog, and would be a perfect addition to any loving home. “We hope that the right family will come along and open their home to this very special girl,” said Gadd.
