Municipal cars set alight in KwaNdengezi protest
Service delivery strike protest in KwaNdengezi.
POLICE are monitoring the situation in KwaNdengezi after three municipal vehicles and the councillor’s office was set alight this morning.
Angry residents complaining about service delivery in the area blocked roads with rocks and burning tyres .
This was not the first time that KwaNdengezi residents caused public disturbance as last week, angry residents burned transit camps (temporary houses for people who are waiting for RDP houses).
They also blocked the roads which made it impossible to gain access in and out of the area.
Ward 12 councillor, Mduduzi Ngcobo said he had no idea what the protest was about.
“I have not been informed officially about the resident’s grievances. I have heard rumours that they want jobs and houses.
“I was very surprised about today’s incidents as they gave the mayor, James Nxumalo a memorandum with their grievances on Monday,” said Ngcobo.
He added that Nxumalo responded to their grievances on Wednesday.
“My office was also destroyed and there were things stolen,” he said.
KZN police spokesman, Thulani Zwane, said the police are guiding the situation in the area.
“At the moment no one has been arrested, but a case of public disturbance has been opened,” he said.
