STAR College Boys’ High was proud to have one of its Grade 9 pupils, Sheherzaad Nash Dheoduth, attend the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) award ceremony, in Pretoria from 8 to 10 October. This was a historic feat for the school.
Sheherzaad was ecstatic to be placed third in the SAASTA National Science Olympiad, which was graded from Grades 4 to 9 in all participating schools nationally. The Olympiad was convened in the second quarter of 2014.
The top three participants, in each category, received a glass shield emblazoned with their position, category of test and name. Together with the aforementioned, and in acknowledgement of their outstanding achievement, the successful candidates also received a Lenovo tablet. SAASTA invited 80 students from all provinces to attend the awards ceremony.
Pupils also visited other landmarks and technology related sites, such as the Science Centre at the University of Pretoria and The National Zoological Gardens. Highlights at the Science Centre included visiting one of three camera obscura’s in South Africa, a pinhole camera and many other interesting exhibits.
Sheherzaad was accompanied by his chemistry teacher from Star College Durban, Tahir Denli. The tour culminated in a grand awards ceremony. The event began with the Grade 7 Astro Quiz, followed by a science demonstration by Sci-bono.
Sheherzaad attributes his excellent results to the dedication demonstrated by his teachers and months of hard work invested in the revision for the Olympiad.
Star College Boys’ High School has chosen Sheherzaad as its SPAR Spar of the Month.
