Sunny says goodbye after three decades

After 30 years' service to the New Germany DSW depot, Sunny Naidoo bids farewell to his friends and colleagues.

FOR 30 years, Durban Solid Waste’s Sunny Naidoo’s smile was around to greet his many customers in the Pinetown area, but last week the friendly driver and supervisor bid his working life farewell as he went on retirement.

Sunny started out as a driver and supervisor for Durban Solid Waste (DSW) 30 years ago, and retired in the same position decades later. For Sunny, the hardest part about retiring was saying goodbye to his lifelong friends.

“I enjoyed my job, my supervisors and my colleagues,” he said.

Area cleansing manager, Bryan Mthembu, who worked with Sunny for eight years, said he felt very blessed to have been given a chance to work with him.

“I trust Sunny. He was a very dedicated worker and I knew I would never receive a complaint from the area he worked in. I knew he worked hard, even when I was not around.

“I know there are many community members that will miss him. The younger workers learned a lot from him in terms of respect, team work and dedication,” Bryan said.

Amos Msomi, another area cleansing officer, said DSW appreciated the good job Sunny did: “He always did his job 100 per cent. We’ve known each other for more than 30 years and he’s always had good work ethics and his workmen knew exactly what he expected from them,” Amos said.

Sunny thanked Bryan, Amos, Sal Govender (office staff), his workmen and DSW for their commitment to him: “When I went to them with something, they never said no.”

He said he hopes to travel overseas during his retirement.
