Joburg duo aims to combat drug abuse
Brian Kondile and Nozipho Shuma walked from Gauteng to Durban to raise funds for drug addicts.
JOBURG duo, Brian Kondile and Nozipho Shuma walked from Gauteng to KZN to raise funds to fight drug abuse among young people.
Kondile who is the founder of the New Dawn organisation said, drugs, especially whoonga, have ruined South Africa and many talented lives.
“Our plan was to educate people about drug abuse, but we grew and started working with rehabilitation centres to assist young people.
In 2012 and 2013 we walked to Cape Town and this year we are in KZN.
On their trip, the duo visit schools and communities to teach people about drugs and offer assistance.
On Wednesday they visited Nazareth accompanied by Pinetown police communication officers, Lt Bongumusa Manqele and Cst Phindile Radebe with Pinetown South CPF chairman, Pst Sibusiso Zondi.
They went on a door to door campaign and provided pamphlets for the residents.
One of the residents in Nazareth said they are living in fear because of the increase in crime in the area because of whoonga.
“They even steal taps, we now use plastic taps. More young people are addicted to whoonga and we always have to watch our backs.
“I have a nephew who smokes whoonga and I have tried everything to keep him on the right path, but nothing has worked. I even chased him out of the house.”
She added that she would really be grateful if they can find help for him to quit this drug.
“We as a community also need to stand together to fight this.
“These are our children, we need to stand firm to fight this demon,” she said.
