Collapsing wall raises concern among pedestrians
A wall that's on the brink of collapsing in Mariannhill Road has been at the centre of a lot of concern over pedestrian safety.
A LOCAL church wall has been leaning dangerously to one side as passing pedestrians have no choice but to take a chance walking past it in Mariannhill Road, Ashley.
For months local resident, Gary Leonard, has driven past the wall at the Old Apostolic Church next to St Benedict School, watching as it leans forward more and more each day.
Having tried numerous times to contact the parks department to report the hazard, Gary said his calls go unanswered as the supervisors are in constant meetings.
“I am not wanting to get involved in anyone’s business, but people risk their lives everyday they walk past there. I even see school children walking past the wall,” Leonard added.
Spokesman for the church, Johan Coetzee, confirmed that the replacement of the boundary wall has gone to tender.
“We hope to have it replaced in the immediate future. We apologise for the inconvenience but we are bound by strict rules and had a dispute with the municipality that delayed the whole process,” Coetzee added.
Coetzee said the church would also cordon off the area, using barricade tape to warn pedestrians of the wall, by the end of this week.
