Pinetown detectives win bust of the month sponsored by Spur, Boxer Stores and Nandos.

TWO Pinetown SAPS officers, D/W/O Simphiwe Nene and D/Sgt Sugar Sosibo won the bust of the month sponsored by Nandos, Spur and Boxer Stores.

D/Sgt Sosibo was commended for his investigation which led to the conviction and sentencing of Sthembiso Nkwanyana (31) for armed robbery and attempted murder on Thursday, 30 October.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, the accused was convicted and sentenced to 28 years imprisonment for robbing construction workers.

“It is alleged that on 18 November 2013, at about 10.30am, the construction workers were on duty along Nipper Road in New Germany when they were approached by four men, one in possession of a firearm.

“A gun was pointed at the victims. Two shots were fired towards them, but there were no injuries. Construction tools to the value of R35 000 were taken and the suspect fled the scene on foot. Police responded to the complaint and one suspect was arrested next to the river in Clermont where he was hiding,” he said.

A 9mm pistol and four rounds of ammunition was found in his possession. He was also charged for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. All the tools that were taken during the robbery were recovered.

“The suspect later appeared in court and was denied bail. After making several appearances in court, the accused was subsequently convicted,” added Manqele.

D/W/O Nene was awarded for his investigation which led to the conviction and sentencing of a rapist.

Manqele said, on Monday 6 October, a 37-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for the rape of two minors.

“The accused was convicted and sentenced on two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

“It is alleged that between 2008 and 2011, the victims between ages of six and eight years were sexually assaulted by the accused.

“He would call the victims to visit his residence in New Germany and he would take them to a swimming pool where he repeatedly raped them. This would happen every time the victims visited his stepdaughter,” said Manqele.
