Pinetown teacher retires after 43 years

Grade 2 teacher, Pamela Kilian of Pinetown Junior Primary School, was also formerly a pupil at the school in 1957.

AFTER 43 years of service in education, a Pinetown teacher and HOD traded her chalkboard for family time when she officially retired last Friday.

Grade 2 teacher, Pamela Kilian of Pinetown Junior Primary School, was formerly a pupil at the school in 1957. She said she always wanted to be a teacher and finally commenced her teaching career at the same school in 1972.

She first taught all Grade 1 subjects for many years, and was thereafter promoted as HOD and a Grade 2 teacher.

She described her best experiences at the school as when she was faced with a variety of challenges. She enjoyed planning events and functions and was also involved in fundraising.

“Time seems to have gone quickly, but 43 years is a long time. I’ve seen many changes in staff and education and it has been fun watching the school grow from strength to strength and change through the times. It’s been great to see some of our past pupils all grown up. We have a super staff who are dedicated but also share lots of fun and laughter together,” said Pam.

She said watching a child grow from Grade 1 to Grade 3, where they are now able to read and speak well and apply what they have been taught, had been truly rewarding, especially when they come back to visit the staff when older.

During her retirement Pam plans to start all the hobbies that she always wanted to try, read lots of books, spend more time with her family and just enjoy life.

“I’m just happy not to have to take work home everyday,” smiled Pam.

The school principal, Nonkululeko Ntaka, said: “Mrs Kilian is a great loss to the school and the community. We are definitely not saying goodbye and invite her to come back at any time.”
