City to assess illegal dumping site in Pinetown
A Pinetown resident has called for the City to come up with permanent measures to stop illegal dumping along Harvey Road.
ETHEKWINI Municipality has acknowledged the concerns raised regarding illegal dumping along Harvey Road, near the entrance to Lello Road in Pinetown.
City spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said addressing illegal dumping requires a collective effort between the municipality, businesses and residents to ensure that public spaces remain clean and the environment is protected.
The municipality responded after a Pinetown resident complained about a site that has become a dumping ground.

Shelagh Atkins said the area has been used as an illegal dump for years, with rubble ranging from household waste to building rubble.
“The municipality does come from time to time to clear the area, but I wish they would erect a fence or put some measure in place to prevent people from dumping,” said the concerned resident.
Mzila said the Waste Management Directorate will assess the site to determine the appropriate interventions required to address the situation.
“Residents also have an important role to play to keep the city clean by placing their refuse out for collection only on their scheduled collection days, refraining from illegal dumping and reporting incidents when they occur.
“Illegal dumping contributes to environmental pollution, creates unhealthy surroundings and negatively affects the cleanliness of communities. Residents are therefore encouraged to work with the municipality to prevent these acts and protect their neighbourhoods,” said the City spokesperson.
Illegal dumping can be reported to the Waste Management Directorate on 031 311 8804 or 031 311 8836, or via email at: dsw@durban.gov.za.
The municipality reiterates that keeping eThekwini clean is a shared responsibility.
“While the City continues to carry out cleaning operations, residents are encouraged to take responsibility for the proper disposal of their waste and work alongside the municipality to prevent illegal dumping and maintain cleaner, healthier communities.”
