Kearsney bags double win against Glenwood

Kearsney College beat Glenwood 13-11 in rugby and 3-0 in hockey.

KEARSNEY College faced off against Glenwood at the weekend, winning both the rugby and hockey games.

Kearsney hosted Glenwood in an exciting and closely contested match rugby match at the weekend. Kearsney got the scoreboard ticking with a long distance penalty kick by James Tedder. He repeated this with another monster kick, to give the hosts a six point lead after 10 minutes. Kearsney impressed with their resolute defence against a speedy Glenwood back line and hard running forwards.

They were soon awarded another convertible penalty, but captain Tristan Dixon decided to have a scrum instead. He justified his decision with a planned striker move to score Kearsney’s only try, which Tedder converted for a 13-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Glenwood was awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time which Boss converted for a 13-3 score line.

Glenwood was the first to score with a penalty in the second half. Kearsney hooker, Joshua van Vuuren, received a technical yellow card and Glenwood attacked with determination during this period and was awarded with an unconverted try which drew them close to a 11-13 deficit.
Kearsney defended well but sadly did not enjoy any quality set phase possession to pose any serious threats on attack. Dixon and Tedder were the outstanding performers for Kearsney.

On the hockey field, Kearsney’s 1st X1 hockey boys started the season with a performance of pure heart, passion and pride, where each player contributed in some way to the win. The game started off at a frantic pace and Glenwood came out firing and had Kearsney under pressure for the first 10 minutes, winning a couple of penalty corners (which Kearsney defended well).

As the game progressed Kearsney got stronger and Glenwood seemed to tire out, allowing the home side to score before half-time through some smart quick thinking by Alex Di Marco, who took a self-pass free hit, drove straight into the circle and hit a great low shot to beat the keeper.

In the second half, Kearsney moved the ball around with great intensity and tempo and started to dominate physically, with Ru Baker, captain Simon Nortje and Matthew Butler setting the tone.

With Kearsney starting to play at a much higher intensity, the game opened up and they were able to score two great field goals in the last 15 minutes through Matt Lees and Lyle Hewitson., to wrap up a convincing 3-0 win against a good Glenwood side.
The man of the match was Kearsney’s Gareth Phillips who kept his team in the game with some great saves and decision making.
