Heroic dog and owner survive armed robbery

A dog and its owner are lucky to be alive after they were both stabbed during an armed robbery.

A BRAVE bullmastiff sustained stabs wounds but survived an armed robbery on Wednesday afternoon when he tried to protect his owner, who was also stabbed by the robber.

According to a post on the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Facebook page, the robbery occurred in Winston Park and the owner was attacked and stabbed several times. Gus, the dog, then attacked the robber who retaliated by stabbing the dog in his shoulder and head before fleeing.

The post further stated that the SPCA was alerted by a neighbour, and trainee inspector, Petra Abrams, and clinic staff members, Lara Mallory and Kerrie Andrews, responded to the call-out. Both Gus and his owner were bleeding profusely.

“When the ambulance arrived, Gus’s owner would not go to hospital until he knew his dog was going to be alright. The Kloof and Highway SPCA arrived at the scene to fetch Gus and make sure that he would be seen to by the vets and treated immediately. Upon arriving back at the SPCA, Gus was taken straight to theatre, his wounds shaven and cleaned and he went into surgery to have his wounds stitched up. Gus was very fortunate to have sustained two superficial stab wounds to his head and two stab wounds to his left shoulder.

“He spent the afternoon and evening recovering in the clinic where he received lots of attention from his visitors, who also came with lots of treats to comfort Gus.”

Gus has since been discharged and was returned to his owner, who is also recovering.
