Family members killed in Hammersdale accident

Investigations are being conducted to establish the cause of the accident that claimed the lives of three women.

THE funeral of the three family members who were killed in an horrific N3 accident under the Hammersdale bridge, on Saturday, will be held today.

The women were travelling southbound towards Pietermaritzburg when a truck travelling in the opposite direction allegedly lost control and overturned. The load on the truck was ejected and collided with the car.

Spokesman for ER24, Chitra Bodasing, said, “When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene, they found the truck on its roof. It was engulfed in flames. Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire.

“On assessment of the car it was found that three passengers, all women, were trapped. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them. They were declared dead. Fire and Rescue Services extricated them from the vehicle.

A fourth passenger from the car was in a critical condition and the driver of the car sustained moderate injuries. They were treated and transported to hospital.

The exact cause of the incident is being investigated by authorities who were at the scene.
