A REMOTE jammer who was operating in Hillcrest was arrested in Durban by the Hillcrest Task Team on Tuesday, 8 September.
One of the victims reported the case at Hillcrest SAPS when he noticed that his laptop was missing from his car.
Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Cst Ndumiso Manqele, said it is alleged that the complainant parked his Toyota Hilux bakkie at the Christian Village parking lot in Hillcrest.
“When he returned to his vehicle, he noticed that his laptop, which had been kept in the back seat of his bakkie, had been stolen, and he suspected that someone had used a remote jamming device.
“A constable from Hillcrest SAPS assisted the complainant by getting all the information that could assist in catching the thief. The police officer then went to the centre to view the video footage and she managed to picked up the number plate of the vehicle that had been involved in the crime,” he said.
Investigations revealed that the car belonged to a car hiring company that is based in La Lucia.
“A follow-up with the company led to the arrest of the alleged remote jammer. The stolen items were recovered and police also found other items that were stolen in a similar incident that occurred at Dencor Properties, Hillcrest,” said Manqele.
The man will be charged and is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 10 September.
Manqele added that people should not leave their valuable items in the car. “Motorists should also make sure that their motor vehicles are properly locked before leaving by physically checking the doors.
“They should also be aware of their surroundings, as criminals are always waiting to strike.” He said that the SAPS believes that the remote jamming cases will decrease after the arrest of the man.
