Man convicted and sentenced for house robbery

After making several appearances in court, the suspect was subsequently convicted.

YESTERDAY, 8 September, Thembelani Hlengwa (29) was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for house robbery in the Pinetown Regional Court.

In the early hours of 5 November, a victim was sleeping in her house in Short Place, New Germany when the suspect broke into the house and threatened her with a knife. The suspect demanded money from the victim.

The victim was also tied up and her mouth smothered with a cloth. The suspect then ransacked the house and loaded a camera, jewellery and other items in the victim’s bag and left the scene on foot. Police were alerted about the robbery and swift response by Pinetown visible policing members led to the arrest of the suspect just few metres away from the crime scene.

All items that were stolen during the robbery were recovered. A case of house robbery was opened at the Pinetown police station and the docket was transferred to detectives for further investigation. The suspect was charged with house robbery and appeared in court, where he was denied bail.
