IN less than a month, the class of 2015 will sit down to write its final set of high school examinations, which will help determine their future academic endeavours.
For many pupils, this is the most stressful time of their lives as the end of their schooling careers near and the next step seems uncertain.
Trial exams are underway to help better prepare all matriculants for their finals. The Queensburgh News visited Phambili High School in Seaview to find out how some pupils are preparing for their trials, their expectations and what they have in mind for next year.
I am both excited and nervous about the last set of exams. We are soon to face the ‘real world’ and its challenges. I want to study financial accounting next year and the pressure is on. As headgirl, I know that all eyes are on me all the time, I have to always set a good example for my peers.
I was not really pleased with my June examination results, and so for me, the pressure is on. I was expecting the trials to be very challenging, but they are not that difficult, I would say I am managing. My most effective way of studying is doing so as though I am teaching that particular subject to someone else – that way, I am able to understand my work best as I imagine being asked questions about that subject.
I make graphs and take notes and summarise them in my own way to better understand my studies. We have also formed groups in class to share and discuss knowledge. I hope to study financial accounting at tertiary level.
I like being on my own when I study, I find studying in groups less productive. In my studying, I like to be practical. I download a lot of ‘how to’ videos and watch those at home to get more insight on a particular subject. Trials so far have proven to not be as difficult as expected. I plan on studying dental therapy and radiography next year.
I find reading and writing my most effective ways of studying. I also study with my friends to ensure that I have not missed out on anything, and if I have, I am then able to get assistance. I hope to study community development next year and I look forward to that, and so it is very important that I study and do well.
I use mind maps and graphs to study. I find that really helpful when it comes to recalling the information I had been learning or studying. I didn’t get the results I was expecting in June, however, I am confident that I will pass and I will be studying medicine next year.
