iThemba boy dies in hospital

The Grade 1 pupil was hit by a bakkie along Ngwele Road.

THE lack of traffic calming measures outside a school in Embo has resulted in a tragedy and a life lost.

A seven-year-old boy was airlifted after he was hit by a bakkie along Ngwele Road on Monday morning, 14 September.

He was a Grade 1 pupil at the iThemba Academy; he was dropped off by a taxi outside the front entrance of the school campus at 08.30am.

He was dropped off on the opposite side of the road to the entrance gates by a taxi. According to the school, this was not his usual procedure, but he was late and did not catch his usual lift club vehicle that would have brought him to within the school grounds.

The boy sadly passed away in hospital on Wednesday, 23 September.

“After pleading for years to the Roads Department and local council to slow down the traffic on our road to our registered schools on the campus, we have now reached a desperate stage,” said iThemba Academy’s chief operating officer, Rieva McMutrie.

Ward counsellor, Themba Shelembe, was saddened by the news and said the eThekwini Transport Authority will be doing inspections of the road on Thursday, 1 October.

“The challenge we are faced with is the fact that this is a provincial road and it is out of our due restrictions,” said Shelembe. Shelembe said they will bypass the due restrictions and do the necessary work on the road.
