Kayleigh doing her bit to help the homeless
Don't let the homeless be forgotten and help to keep them fed.
HOMELESSNESS is a worldwide issue which led to 10 October being marked as World Homeless Day in 2010.
The concept of ‘World Homeless Day’ emerged from online discussions between people working to respond to homelessness in various parts of the world.
Kayleigh Symes made it her mission to feed homeless people in the Pinetown area from July 2014.
Symes, the founder of Heaven’s Kitchen, said it breaks her heart to see homeless people who do not have anything to eat.
Her biggest wish is to have enough to feed them every day; she feeds 80 to 100 people a week.
She said she has had great support, especially from the upper Highway area.
“We have the most amazing volunteers who are so committed every week. We always need more volunteers to help serve on the night.”
Symes said this is not for everybody: “We need people who are committed and have the same heart beat as I do. There’s so much organising and administration work that goes into this sort of NGO,” she said.
The kitchen is currently running a Christmas fundraiser. “Our goodie bags consist of items to help people on the streets and to make their lives a bit easier. We do this once a month,” Symes added.
People can donate a meal on a Thursday night.
