THE eleventh day of the eleventh month represented a historic day for Highbury Preparatory School as their museum, The Highburian, opened its doors.

To coincide with the museum’s opening, pupils from Weavers’ Nest to Grade 7 painted poppies made from recycled plastic bottles.

This visually stunning project led by Grade 7 parent, Jenna Weyer, is a first for the school. The poppies were ‘planted’ around the Highbury chapel near the school’s entrance and serve as a visual reminder of the brave Highbury old boys who fought and died in the World Wars.

Headmaster of the school, Brendan Carroll said this inspiring space preserves Highbury’s 112 years of history and is a tangible and interactive memory of those who have walked through the school’s halls.

“We are extremely thankful to the incredible vision and passion of Sandy Woods and Amanda McVeigh, two Grade 7 mums, who were the catalyst to this project.

“Their vision has come to life and The Highburian will be enjoyed by boys, old boys, staff, visitors and parents for decades to come. A notable aspect of this project was the power of teamwork. From the group of Grade 7 moms, to old boy moms, to curators from local museums, to Highbury staff, to suppliers and to those who volunteered their time so generously, the Highbury family are extremely thankful to Iain McMillian from Hilton College, great grandson of the original founder, cut the ribbon to mark the official opening. The McMillan family founded Highbury in 1903 and three generations led and grew the school over the next eight decades. Bianca Woolley, marketing manager said this day will be remembered in Highbury’s history for years to come.

“The Highburian will be open to the community by appointment.
