Highbury boys win national tourney

Highbury won the tournament after beating the school representing Western Province 44-41.

HIGHBURY Preparatory School’s first basketball team travelled to Pretoria as the top U13 school team from KZN to compete in the SA school champs, a national tournament sanctioned by the Department of Sports and Recreation and Primary Education, during the December holidays.

Highbury marketing and communications coordinator, Camilla Blomfield, said the boys met some stiff competition from the other provinces, but their winning spirit and excellent skills and teamwork made them a team difficult to beat.

“Coach Nkosi Bhengu had great faith in their abilities and they never gave up, no matter what the odds,” she said.

Highbury won the tournament after beating the school representing Western Province 44-41.

“The Highbury family are exceptionally proud of this achievement as this was the school’s first time competing at this level. Five of the boys, being in Grade 6 in 2015, from this team will aim to repeat the dosage in 2016 after gaining invaluable experience. The other boys have moved onto Kearsney College, where they will be an asset to the U14 basketball team,” added Blomfield.
