Armed robbers target bank users

Business owners are urged to do as much electronic banking as possible.

ARMED robbers held up staff outside a business premises in Henwood Road in New Germany after following them from the bank last Monday.

Blue Security’s operations manager, Brian Jackson, urged business-owners and their staff to be vigilant when driving to the bank, especially around month-end.

“Three staff members went to the bank to cash a cheque for an undisclosed sum of cash and three men, driving a silver VW Jetta, followed them back to the business premises,” Jackson said. “The robbers drove into the driveway behind them and jammed the gate before jumping out of their vehicle and robbing a staff member of the cash.”

Jackson urged business owners to brief staff on security when conducting month-end or weekend banking banking. “We advise business owners and their customers to conduct as much of their banking as possible electronically, because it is far safer than risking being robbed while transporting cash to and from the bank.

“Criminals operate outside business premises and banks and stalk their victims to establish movement patterns before striking. If you do need to regularly bank cash, make sure that you vary the days and times for trips to the bank and always ensure that there is no one following you when you leave and return,” concluded Jackson.
